Scratchart of two owls for a commission. Am pretty please with it, considering it is my second attempt at scratchart (see "Giraffe" in my gallery for the first). Scratchart is pretty tough, considering there is no varying degree of colors; either it is black or it is white. Lighter patches must be made by making wider/more marks in an area compared to another. Nifty information, eh?

Scanner killed it to varying degrees.

Materials, Time and Whatnot
Black scratch paper
Razor blade
2+ hours prep time
1 hour drawing outline
6 - 12 hours actual scratching
Photo Ref. used

This is going straight onto a :+fav: - my Mum used to work with scratchboard so I know just how chronically time consuming & sometimes brain-numbing it can be. It's not a medium I have the patience to work with, but clearly you do & what's more you show remarkable talent for it. This is brilliantly executed & the subject matter, owls with pale plumage who spend most of their time out in the dark, fits the medium perfectly.

O_O That is utterly incredible! It's mind-boggling, man, especially to someone like me who spends an hour drawing and colouring a crappy doodle... ^^;
The time it took you is more than evident in the final product, and was more than worth it!
Good grief. It is simply fantastic! :worship:

Whoa you definately deserve some serious props for your hard work on this. It looks great! I understand about the hardness of actually doing one of these; I don't have the patience for it at ALL. But you totally took it to another level; the owls look so real! They are beautifully drawn and even though it's such a graphic black or white, you gave the impression of gray tones with how you used your tools. It's amazing! Great job and beautiful piece.

:blush: Thank you very much! I almost wanted to quit halfway through, because it wasn't going the way I wanted. But hearing you say that it turned out well makes me happy I didn't quit :hug:

Absolutely fantastic! Your scratch art pieces are some of my favorite on deviantart. Scratchboard sounds excruciatingly difficult, but the results make it absolutely worth it.

It's really difficult when you first start out, but like anything it gets easier with practise :) Thanks so much :hug:
